Paul Gavarni

Paul Gavarni

Paul Gavarni (French, 1804-1866), along with Honoré Daumier, was the great satirist of the foibles, vices and idiosyncrasies of 19th century French society. Born Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier, he took the nom de plume "Paul Gavarni" when he began publishing lithographs in the popular press in the 1830s. He became closely associated with "Le Charivari" -- an illustrated magazine that specialized in caricature -- producing biting portraits of public figures and commenting critically on modern Parisian life.
