Hendrick Goltzius - The Passion

Hendrick Goltzius - The Passion

Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558-1617) made his reputation in the late 16th and early 17th centuries as one of Europe’s most original and virtuosic engravers. At the height of International Mannerism, he produced The Passion (1596-98), a powerful series of twelve engravings narrating the story of Christ’s death and resurrection. The series showcases Goltzius’s protean skill and visual invention, while paying homage to previous versions of the sacred subject by Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden. The Passion brought Goltzius acclaim in his own lifetime, and remains one of the consummate examples of the art of engraving.
