DescriptionA female figure, the symbol of penitence, rides a chariot pulled by death and time. She holds instruments of flagellation, and wears a crown of thorns. Four cherubs complete the scene: one flies at top of the image, holding a banner aloft with the title of the allegorical subject. Another flies in front of the chariot heralding Penitence's arrival with a palm frond raised in one hand, and lilies on the other. Two more cherubs are on the ground at bottom left, one raising a cross, the other holding broken chains. This print served as the frontispiece for Paolo Aringhi's 'Triumphus Poenitentiae sive selectae Poenitentium Mortes' published in Rome in 1670.This record has been reviewed by University Galleries staff but may be incomplete or contain errors.
