DescriptionA figure in hat, earmuffs, and coat stands ankle-deep in snow next to a mailbox with the name "Landeck" on it. Barn with silo and car advancing along road in background. The mailbox references Martin Lewis's friend and follow printmaker, Armin Landeck, who was a neighbor in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, where the scene takes place.
InterpretationsMartin Lewis achieved fame for his atmospheric prints in the 1930s and 40s. This wintry scene departs from his best known urban nocturnes set in New York City. A figure in hat, earmuffs, and coat stands ankle-deep in snow as a car approaches along a road in the distance. A barn, silo, and bare trees complete the rustic setting. The print has autobiographical resonance: during the Great Depression Lewis lived in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, where the scene takes place. He was neighbors with his friend and fellow printmaker, Armin Landeck, whose last name appears on the mailbox. - John Murphy, Hoehn Curatorial Fellow for Prints
