John Mackie Falconer
Art of the Print: A fine etcher, painter and watercolorist, John Mackie Falconer came to the United States in 1836. His first experiments with etching date from 1849. It wasn't until 1866, however, the he began to dedicate himself to this medium and during the following twenty years. Falconer produced many etched views of New York, Brooklyn, Boston and the American South. Falconer was a full member of the New York Etching Club. He was also made an honorary member of the National Academy of Design in 1856. Living mostly in Brooklyn, Falconer was a central figure in the cultural life of the community. Among his closest friends there were the fellow artists, Thomas Cole and Asher Brown Durand. As an original etcher, John Mackie Falconer became best known for his studies of older buildings and ruins.
