Honoré Daumier
Honoré Daumier (French, 1808-1879) produced some 4,000 lithographs in his lifetime surveying the sweep of 19th century French politics and society. Over the course of a nearly 40-year career, illustrated magazines such as "La Caricature" and "Le Charivari" published his cutting celebrity caricatures, observational humor, and acerbic political commentary. Daumier's prolific output constitutes a treasure trove of sociological observation and keen insight into the manners and morals of French society, and he remains a key inspiration for politically-engaged artists today.
