DescriptionPublished in "Le Charivari” 13 November 1842. Overweight Roman general, Caius Marius, is sitting on a low wall in the ruins of Carthage in North Africa, which the Roman army had destroyed. He says to a nearby soldier: "Soldier, say to the senate that in my noble poverty I have taken for a chair a ruin. And if I were in Sylla I would not be sitting here."
