DescriptionAbout two-dozen men, in varying states of decay, hang from the branches of a single tree. At center, another man is about to be put to death while a priest climbs a ladder with a cross outstretched before him, offering the soldier one cast chance at redemption. Below them, another man kneels, hands clasped in prayer, while a second priest prays over him. Troops in formation encircle the tree, reaching far into the background, observing the executions.
