DescriptionRiver scene of tranquil blue waters passing under a small bridge with orange highlights. The river is surrounded by masses of land to the right and left, and both green coniferous and deciduous trees changing colors with the season.
Interpretations Gustave Baumann was a highly-regarded printmaker active in New Mexico in the early twentieth century. This group of prints and woodblocks (visible in the nearby case) demonstrate the process of making a color woodcut, Rio Pecos, a portrayal of the river that flows from eastern New Mexico into Texas. A separate woodblock was carved for each color used in the final print. The parts of the design to be printed in a particular color stand “proud” of the surface while the non-design elements are cut away.
