DescriptionPortrait of a French nobleman. The subject stands sideways, turning his head towards the viewer. He is dressed opulently in a brocaded fabric shirt beneath armor, a large lace collar, pearl earrings, a billowing fringed sash tied about his waist, and a star medallion hanging on his chest. The hilt of a sword is tied at his hip. In his left hand, he holds a scroll of paper, and with his left, he touches his gauntlets on the table in front of him. A plumed helmet lies just behind them, also on the table. In the background, a distant landscape is depicted, with what looks to be a hilly coastline, with a building on fire on the horizon.
