DescriptionLinocut depicting a print shop and printer - likely Juan Pablos - in the process of pulling a print from a press. The design has a grid-like and graphic quality, and is printed in striking black and white.
InterpretationsArtemio Rodriguez was born in Mexico in 1972. Inspired by medieval woodcuts, he primarily works in black and white. A linocut is similar to a woodcut, except the non-design elements are carved out of a sheet of linoleum rather than a woodblock. Here Rodriguez depicts Juan Pablos as the “first printmaker in America,” operating a press in his Mexico City workshop—the first of its kind in the “New World.” Between 1539 and his death in 1560 Pablos produced 35 books, including the earliest printed book published in the Americas. -- John P. Murphy, Hoehn Curatorial Fellow for Prints (2018-21)
