DescriptionThis print features two separate plates, a central engraved image depicting the Death of Meleager by Q. Fonbonne from the drawing by J.M. Nattier after the painting by Charles Le Brun, and a decorative etched border by Bernard Picart after Charles Le Brun. There are two separate platemarks that show different images; the border is designed to look like a decorative frame that fits perfectly around the central image. The central image depicts the death of the Greek hero Meleager, who lays forlorn on a bed, surrounded by mourners, both people and hunting dogs. The border includes imagery related to Meleager's hunting triumphs including bows and arrows, horns, swords, clubs, and at the bottom center, the head of a boar.
