DescriptionA group of colorful parrots surround one bird, lying prone on the ground, its wings spread out around its body. In the background: a colorful but moody sunset over a harbor with masted ships. The dying parrot seems to be giving its last words to its compatriots, who all look towards their ailing companion intently. The composition is modeled after Benjamin West's famous painting entitled "The Death of General Wolfe" (1770), which depicts General James Wolfe dying on the battlefield at the moment of his victory. The Carolina Parakeet was declared extinct in 1939.This record has been reviewed by University Galleries staff but may be incomplete or contain errors.
