DescriptionThe angel Gabriel, flying in the upper left, appears to Joachim at center, foretelling of the eventual birth of his daughter, the Virgin Mary. Joachim kneels on the top of a hill, overlooking his flock of sheep and three shepherds, who look up at the angel in awe. In the far background, across the water, a small town is depicted nestled in the hillside.
