DescriptionAeneas at the center of the image carries his father Anchises on his back, legs draped around his neck, and his robe billowing and swirling around them. Aeneas's young son Ascanius walks beside him, holding his free hand. Behind them in the far left background, the city of Troy burns. The composition is highlighted with white ink on the beige paper to heighten the contrasts and drama of the image.
