InterpretationsThis type of Kumeyaay basket traditionally uses bunch grass for the bundle foundation. The three-leaf sumac is peeled and this produces a white splint, as seen here outlining the large star. The juncus has different colors depending on what part of the stem is used. The variegated tan is from the upper stems, while the dark reddish brown is from the lower section of the juncus. The central turtle and the black accents are juncus that has been dyed black with elderberry leaves and stems.
